HTC Vive has launched the beta version of VIVEPORT Streaming that will allow for the wireless streaming of PC VR content to both the VIVE Focus Plus as well as the VIVE Wave Standalone VR devices. Owners of the standalone Vive Wave VR headsets will now be able to wirelessly stream VR apps from the PC to the virtual reality headsets.

The wireless Viveport VR streaming was first announced in August this year. For the just launched beta version, the Viveport software will have to be updated to the latest version. The streaming service will only be available for the Viveport Infinity subscribers. For optimal streaming performance, HTC recommends a 5GHz connection.

Standalone VR devices are fast growing in popularity over the tethered PC-based or smartphone-based devices. However, one of the key challenges still plaguing the use of these devices is the difficulty in accessing the rich library of top-quality PC VR content without relying on a physical cable connection. These are currently only accessible to the PC VR headsets or to Oculus Quest headsets via the Oculus Link connection.

The Beta of VIVEPORT Streaming which was released today allows for Vive Focus Plus or the Wave Platform headset owners to access the PC VR content on their standalone virtual reality headsets. VIVE Focus Plus device owners will now gain access to thousands of titles on VIVEPORT in addition to the over 300 titles that constitute the native Vive Wave content. All of this content will be available within a native mobile UI.

Viveport Streaming is freely available to the Viveport Infinity members that own the Vive Focus Plus headset. Soon, it will offer support for the other full six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) standalone virtual reality headsets that are built on the Vive Wave platform. The Viveport software will automatically detect and link the virtual reality device and the VR-ready PC with a single click as long as both of them are on the 5Ghz Wi-Fi network.

It is becoming a lot easier to have diverse virtual experiences with versatile VR devices. Users are now able to access vast libraries of content without having to grapple with the trade-off between the high-quality visuals and massive content libraries of the PC VR headsets and the ease of use and wireless freedom that they can get with the standalone virtual reality headsets. VivePort Streaming will link a large content library with the convenience of the standalone virtual reality headset without having to rely on PC tethering.

Viveport Infinity is currently the only VR content subscription service that offers users access to an unlimited library of VR titles available for a price of $12.99 per month or less. It also has an affordable annual plan. For VR enthusiasts, Viveport Infinity is the first port of call for exploring some of the best virtual reality content.

The Viveport Infinity library includes some of the virtual reality classics like SUPERHOT VR as well as some of the brand-new releases such as Arizona Sunshine, Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted and Battlewake.

There are hundreds of titles that Infinity members can explore to unearth their favorites.  The Vive Focus Plus buyers automatically get a complimentary six-month Viveport Infinity membership along with regular special offers. Viveport users will have to update both the Vive Focus Plus firmware and Viveport software to the latest versions in order to activate the new feature. At the moment, the service will only be available to home users but it should be available to enterprise users soon.
