The Chinese tech glasses manufacturer Rokid presented new AR glasses from its Vision product range at the CES 2021. The new Rokid Vision 2 feature a fresh hardware design and new software and is being marketed to enterprise and end users.

The Rokid Vision 2 takes the form factor of the Augmented Reality company’s previous mixed reality (MR) products: the glasses are lightweight and leverage the optical waveguide technology similar to what is used in Microsoft’s HoloLens 2. The Rokid Vision 2 feature a 40-degree field of view which, according to the company, is equivalent to “viewing a 120-inch TV that is 4 meters away.”

The small form factor in the Rokid Vision 2 is due to the fact that an external device such as a tablet, phone or a laptop provides all the processing functions. As a result, the mixed reality glasses somewhat extends the existing user interfaces of these devices to enable users to play videogames or watch video content in a mixed reality experience.

The mixed reality glasses also have built-in speakers and dual microphones that provide hands-free voice control as well as 6DoF SLAM through a central RGB camera that a wearer can use to walk around virtual spaces.

Apart from the mixed reality hardware, the company has also built various in-house applications including Virtual City, Holographic Cinema and Fantasy World.

Fantasy World refers to a 360-degree immersive space for showcasing head control, voice as well as gestures while the Holographic Cinema gives users a 4D IMAX theater-like experience. On the other hand. Virtual City helps in showcasing the 6DoF SLAM technology.

The apps and demos in Rokid Vision 2 have been developed spatial interaction. Here is a summary of the three: –

  • Fantasy World: This is an immersive space that surrounds the user where one can interact with the voice, gestures and head control.
  • Holographic Cinema: This is an IMAX-like cinema experience that can play 2D, 3D and 360-degree panoramic videos.
  • Virtual City: Users can move freely around the virtual room thanks to 6DoF tracking. Rokid stated that room tracking is provided by a single RGB camera.

The Rokid AR glasses run on the company’s Rokid XR operating system that supports chips from Qualcomm, HiSilcon and Amlogic among others. SXR SDK provides developers with access to all the new functions of the augmented reality glasses.

Rokid aims to develop natural interfaces for the larger markets. The mixed reality company therefore plans to not only reach the end users but also the industry. However, it admits that Vision 2 is not the apex of its mixed reality efforts.

According to Rokid founder and CEO Mingming Zhu, the mixed reality company builds not just products but also interactive platforms which integrate the human, virtual and the real worlds. The company sees XR as the next-generation platform capable of perfectly integrating human-computer interactions via voice, vision and display and which can radically transform how we live, work, learn and entertain.

Zhu stated that Rokid will keep on enabling partners via innovative user interfaces and advanced products that can reach more consumers and industries. The company’s ultimate mission, he stated, was to live up to its mission ‘Leave Nobody Behind’.

Rokid advertises its new mixed reality glasses as an extension to the tablets, smartphones and PC. The official trailer released by the company shows a cable connection between the Rokid Vision 2 and similar devices. It is possible that the AR glasses might require a player and be connected to it via a USB-C cable. Rokid stated that the Vision 2 is both 4G and 5G compatible.

The Vision 2 AR glasses are lightweight and foldable like ordinary conventional glasses. Like Magic Leap 1 and HoloLens, the Rokid glasses also have a built-in waveguide display.

Rokid has stated that the AR glasses have 85% light transmission and a 40-degree field of view. It has two loudspeakers directed towards the wearer’s ears to provide stereo sound. The AR glasses will be operated using voice control.

Rokid hasn’t specified yet when it plans to make its Vision 2 glasses available or what they will cost.
