Tetris Effect (2018) is a VR rendition of the popular 1980s stacker puzzle. The VR version will soon have lots of new features that will introduce some new online multiplayer modes along with cross-play to supported platforms.

The update has been dubbed the ‘Connected Summer 2021’ expansion and is set to launch on SteamVR, PSVR as well as on Oculus Quest at some point in late July. There is also a free beta of the expansion that will be released from June 23rd to July 5th for Epic Games and PlayStation players. Access to Oculus Quest and Steam will be by invite-only.

The new cross-play function will enable a player to create private rooms using a four-digit alphanumeric code so that they can directly connect with friends across all the supported platforms. The private matches will feature a spectator mode which will allow for between four to six spectators to watch and also emote in real time. As long as a player does not opt out, the ranked matches will feature all of the game’s players.

Below is an overview of every new multiplayer mode that is coming to Tetris Effect: –

  • Connected: In this multiplayer mode, you can form a three-player team and then try to defeat the AI-controlled Bosses (or player-controlled Bosses, in the Full Moon 24-hour event each weekend). You will connect your Matrices as you all enter the Zone and Clear Lines and do some massive damage.
  • Zone Battle: This is a one-on-one competition that’s played with standard Tetris Effect settings. The key to victory hinges on the adept use of the time-stopping Zone mechanic. This mode provides a great way of testing out the skills that you have developed in the single-player.
  • Score Attack: This is also a one-on-one competition. It is played using the standard Tetris Effect settings. However, in this case, there is no exchange of Line Attacks. If you have a higher score than your opponent when the game comes to an end, you end up the winner. This is like a “single-player competitive Tetris.”
  • Classic Score Attack: This is a one-on-one score attack competition that’s played via old-school Tetris settings so it does not feature Hard Drops, there is no ability to hold a Tetrimino, there is only a single Tetrimino shown in the Next Queue and the Tetriminos also spin differently as the Lock Down immediately upon touching the surface, and so forth. This is the tougher version of Tetris and it is used for pro competitions like the annual Classic Tetris World Championship.

Additional new features include ‘PAL Speed’ that recreates the 8-bit European version of the game as well as ‘Slow Speed’ which increases the difficulty by slowing down the Tetrimino movements.
