The social deception game Among Us will soon get a virtual reality adaptation. The VR version is set to launch on Meta Quest, SteamVR, and PlayStation VR and is being developed by Schell Games, the same studio behind the I Expect You To Die Series. No release date has been provided yet but a trailer of it debuted at the 2021 Games Awards.

The Virtual Reality version of the game is a first-person 3D experience rather than a third-person 2D game. However, the VR version retains the “core mechanics” of the original multiplayer game by the developer Innersloth. In the short trailer of the game below, a player can be seen interacting with a keypad inside a cartoony 3D room before they are attacked by another crewmate who might be a sinister imposter.

The title was previously launched for PC as well as mobile platforms in 2018. In late 2020, it was launched for Nintendo consoles. The non-VR version of the game also got an Xbox and PlayStation release in mid-December, 2021. The virtual reality adaptation of the game is part of the studio’s partnership with the consulting firm Robot Teddy that is currently overseeing the transition of the game into new platforms.

The game Among Us has been inspired by social deduction games such as Mafia and Werewolf in which large groups of players must guess the identity of some dangerous hidden threat. This will not be the first time when mechanics is playing out in virtual reality as Ubisoft published a take on Werewolves Within in 2016. In 2021, the game was adapted into a horror-comedy. Among Us inspired a huge fanbase and many of the fans are likely to follow it into virtual reality.
