Meta Connect Will Be a Virtual Event Taking Place On October 11
This year’s Meta Connect event will be an online event and takes place on October 11. On his Facebook page, Mark Zuckerberg also teased the company’s new headset that will likely be unveiled at this year’s event.
This will be the ninth Connect event and the highlight of the event will, undoubtedly, be the launch of Meta’s new premium-quality headset.

This year’s Meta Connect event will be a “one-day virtual event” and according to Zuckerberg, will explore “the building of the metaverse and the future of augmented and virtual reality.” Information about the sessions and speakers at the event hasn’t been revealed yet. No doubt, we will see many of the leading Meta lights harping on the metaverse tune.
The Meta Connect event, previously Oculus Connect before the company’s rebranding, takes place annually, towards the end of the year. Meta usually makes major announcements of metaverse products during the event. The event also features presentations for developers and offers a glimpse into both virtual reality and augmented reality.
Between 2014 and 2019, the event was known as Oculus Connect. In 2020, it was renamed Facebook Connect. From 2021, it has been called Meta Connect following the company’s rebrand last year. This year’s event takes place on October 11, 2022.
Conference Program to Come Soon
The Meta Connect 2022 will take place in the virtual format for the third time in a row. The 2020 and 2021 events took the virtual format due to the pandemic.
The keynote at this year’s event will be streamed on the Reality Labs Facebook page. Also, thanks to Zuckerberg’s interview on the Joe Rogan podcast a month ago, we know that Meta will be unveiling its new high-end virtual reality headset, Project Cambria or Meta Quest Pro at the event. The premium quality headset features both eye-tracking and face-tracking functionalities and can mimic the facial expressions of users and render these to the headset in real time, ensuring your virtual avatar is lively and not some lifeless and soulless blob.
Project Cambria also has new hardware features such as pancake lenses that now enable the headset to have slimmer form factors and improved comfort. The headset also has a high-quality passthrough mode that allows for better and new mixed reality functions.
In his Joe Rogan podcast, Zuckerberg also hinted at the pricing of the new headset, saying it will cost a lot more than the company’s $400 Quest 2. The headset also has some mixed reality functions. There are reports that the device might cost as much as $1,500.
Project Cambria headset heralds a new product line consisting of a high-end and high-priced headset. The headset targets professional users, so-called prosumers, and enterprise users. The headset targets work, productivity, and virtual meeting use cases. Meta is intent on opening up new markets on top of gaming and fitness applications.
China-based ByteDance, the TikTok parent company, will also be unveiling its new Pico 4 Pro headset before the end of the month which will likely compete against the Quest Pro.
This year’s Meta Connect could have some announcements related to virtual worlds. In the past year alone, Meta launched its VR-based social platform Horizon Worlds, first in the U.S. and Canada and more recently, in the UK, France, and Spain.

In his Facebook post, Zuckerberg promises to share updates on the progress that the company has made as well as details of what is coming up “in the near and far future.”
Oculus’ former technical director John Carmack will be giving live lectures on virtual reality at the event like in the previous events. This year, his lecture will take place inside virtual reality, for the first time.
The last few months have also seen Meta experiment with NFTs on Facebook and Instagram and it is possible that this year’s Meta Connect event might touch on how these are related to the potential marketplaces for digital creators along with the company’s broader vision to sell items in the metaverse.
Meta has poured billions into the development of its metaverse vision so it is expected that its top brass will be giving talks on the progress that has been achieved to date as well as on what’s likely to come up next.
