The Oculus Rift ‘Crystal Cove’ Prototype is 2014’s Best of CES Winner
The Oculus Rift ‘Crystal Cove’ Prototype has emerged as the biggest winner of the official Best of CES Award for 2014. The latest Rift became a big hit at the show and won more than 10 awards including the official awards for CES: Best in Show from Engadget as well as the Verge and Wired among others. In January 2014, Oculus VR revealed an upgraded prototype code named Crystal Cove at Consumer Electronics Show. The prototype utilizes a specialized low-persistence of vision OLED display with a modified motion tracking system and an external camera that follows infrared dots found on the headset.
The recently updated motion tracking system helps in identifying actions such as leaning, crouching and bending which in turn attenuate the discomfort experienced by users when the previous software did not recreate these actions.
By unveiling its latest prototype, Oculus VR has taken a successful leap to stardom. With Crystal Cove, users can now expect to enjoy a virtual experience without having to go through the sickening feelings of queasiness and nausea. Unlike its predecessors, the new VR headset has added sensors and cameras that keep track of any movement made by your head and body and provide an almost exact simulation. The latest Rift holds a promise of extremely immersive gaming and entertainment. Moreover, with the help of Crystal Cove, virtual reality can be used in various other fields than such as manufacturing, educational and training communities, movie industries, medical setups and other businesses.
The Rift uses a low-latency positional tracking system offering six degrees of freedom that means users can play more comfortably than ever in a superiorly immersive environment. Furthermore, the latest device opens the doors to many other possibilities in the virtual reality gaming world such as peeking out of windows, inspecting something from several angles and avoiding bullets. The tracking system, built by the team of Oculus VR, is optically-based and has a custom vision pipeline which will continue to be improved. Crystal Cove is not available in the consumer markets yet and the release date remains unknown. Earlier Oculus VP Nate Mitchell had said that 2014 will be a big year for Oculus VR and with more than 10 awards on their shelf, it seems like he was right!
