Montreal VR startup looking to raise $350,000 to develop headset
Virtual reality is still in the tender stages of development, allowing startups to crop up and take pot shots at Oculus, who are currently the leaders of the VR revolution.
One startup, based in Montreal, Canada, is looking to develop a headset on Kickstarter. Totem, the name of the Kickstarter, almost mimics Oculus’ initial funding run, with $350,000 to develop the headset and a first developer kit for backers.
Totem is available on the Kickstarter for $450, with two earlier birds saving 150 customers $50. This makes the Totem quite expensive compared to the Oculus Rift and Gear VR, although the latter does require a $700 smartphone to work.
What the developer Vrvana Inc is promising is better quality from the headset, with more performance, new features to enhance virtual reality and more work done to make the headset feel comfortable on the head for hours.
The Totem has a full HD display with wide viewing angles, key for a virtual reality headset. The Galaxy Note 4 should still be the best “VR display” on the market, but an inbuilt display allows more room to add new features.
More features like the built in onboard cameras, perfect for measuring depth and position. This makes it much easier for games to receive biometric feedback about the player and change the gaming experience.
The on-board camera also works as a way to enable video passthrough, something first seen on the Gear VR. This will allow gamers to look outside the headset without taking the whole thing off.
Totem looks beefy for a reason, Vrvana are packing a lot of horsepower into this developer kit, to make it the ultimate way to experience gaming and movies on virtual reality.
Vrvana wants to have this product on the market in the second half of 2015, with an April 2015 release for the Kickstarter edition.https://virtualrealitytimes.com/2014/09/16/montreal-vr-startup-looking-to-raise-350000-to-develop-headset/https://virtualrealitytimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-22.40.21-600x329.pnghttps://virtualrealitytimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-22.40.21-150x90.pngKickstarterStartupsVR HeadsetsKickstarterVirtual reality is still in the tender stages of development, allowing startups to crop up and take pot shots at Oculus, who are currently the leaders of the VR revolution.
