The dream of a VR experience onboard a flight has always been a dream, until now.

A first for any airline, Australian airline company Qantas in partnership with Samsung Electronics Australia will be offering the Samsung Gear VR headsets to First Class passengers as an inflight entertainment option on select Qantas flights. This is a three-month trial period offered on select Airbus A380 aircraft, bringing the thought of the possibility of VR technology as an inflight entertainment option to reality.

The VR in-flight entertainment experience will be on a three-month trial to assess feedback from customers on offering cutting-edge technology aboard selected long-haul flights. The Gear VR headsets will be offered to customers on Melbourne and Sydney International First Lounges as well.

According to Olivia Wirth, Qantas Group Executive for Brand, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, the VR headsets will bring a fresh take on Qantas’ lounge and inflight entertainment, as well as a tool for promoting the airline’s destinations and experiences. She added that offering VR technology aboard their flights is an industry first, and Qantas is proud to be at the forefront of innovation in bringing the latest inflight entertainment for its passengers.

Arno Lenior, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Electronics Australia, said that Samsung is very proud to work with Qantas in delivering the Gear VR technology onboard its flights, and that the deployment of the VR technology aboard selected Qantas flights will deliver an exceptional customer experience for the flying public.

Curated content will be available on these headsets, including a special 3D experience of the Kakadu National Park created by Tourism NT, an Australian tourism group based in Darwin, Australia. Adam Giles, Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism of Tourism NT, expressed that the VR technology is an innovation that will bring a whole new dimension to the Kakadu experience. He added that Tourism NT is proud to showcase Kakadu National Park as a must-see tourist destination promoted using industry-leading technology. In the near future, passengers aboard Qantas First Class cabins will be able to watch movies, access promotional content, and a glimpse of the airline’s key destinations using the VR headsets.

The Gear VR headsets will provide an immersive 360-degree entertainment experience with its selection of content. These headsets will be offered in the Sydney and Melbourne International First Class Lounges from mid-February and for Qantas First Class passengers aboard selected Airbus A380 flights between Los Angeles and key Australian cities from mid-March.
