Gaming experiences in VR are ultimately dependent on the user’s control and movement, augmented by highly sophisticated gaming control hardware. In the past, motion controls are limited to a two-dimensional space. But with the profound potential of VR to take gaming to a 3D space, interacting with games has never been the same. A Silicon Valley-based gaming control hardware company, Titanium Falcon Inc., has completed the design of a new gaming controller that makes use of the hands and fingers to translate motion in VR. This gaming controller takes the form of a ring, and is called a “smart ring”.

The smart ring, called Talon, has a minimalistic design that measures only less than 3.8 millimeters thick. Titanium Falcon took the essential nature of the human hands and fingers to make movement, and went to the drawing board to make a game controller that takes full advantage of the hands and fingers – basically turning natural hand gestures into tangible motion responses in a virtual environment. By making a smart ring that fits in any finger, Titanium Falcon is able to create the human hand a virtual game controller without the awkward feeling of wearing gloves.

The technology behind the Talon smart ring is pretty straightforward. By using Bluetooth Low Energy technology and a 9-axis motion control sensor, the Talon smart ring connects to any smart device such as smartphones, tablets, TVs, computers, as well as a supported VR headset, and Talon will convert your hand gestures appropriately in response to any virtual content. Some of the key features of the Talon include a 32-bit CPU, a Noise Reduction Technology for improved communication, and its 9-axis motion control sensor that includes the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. Talon is also equipped with 2 action buttons to offer more control options for gamers. The ring is compatible with almost all types of games, including shooting, racing and sports games.

The Talon smart ring controller project plans to raise US$300,000 on crowdfunding site Indiegogo. Titanium Falcon is made up of a team of hardware designers and engineers, focusing on the development of essential, wearable gaming hardware to reinvent how people do gaming. Recently, the tech company has just won the 1st Place in the Silicon Valley Entrepreneurs Pitch Fest.
