A group of mathematicians is trying to create a different world inside VR by creating a virtual reality space where you can explore alternative geometries. In this new hyperbolic world, the basic rules of geometry we know do not apply.

Non-Euclidean Space in Virtual Reality

Scientists Elisabetta Matsumoto and Henry Segerman are working together to teach people about hyperbolic geometry. Unlike normal geometry, in non-Euclidean geometry parallel lines can intersect or veer apart, getting either closer or farther from each other.

They created Hyperbolic VR, a space that will amaze and at the same time will leave you a bit confused. The hyperbolic world in its current state doesn’t have much to offer yet, but you can move around its infinity of colors and symmetry. The team is already planning to build hyperbolic streets and houses in Virtual Reality and they are even thinking about creating a non-Euclidian version of Basketball.

“You can think about it, but you don’t get a very visceral sense of this until you actually experience it,” says Elisabetta Matsumoto.

This is not the first time people try to playing sports in non-Euclidean space, a topologist called David Dumas once created a Virtual Reality racquetball game with the help of his students. After hitting the ball from any direction, the ball would eventually return to the starting point.

“It feels like the entire universe is within a sphere that is maybe within a couple meters’ radius,” says topologist Henry Segerman.
