The US Army is equipping soldiers with Tactical Augmented Reality (TAR), which is a new augmented display that will help them by providing deeper information.

Tactical Augmented Reality –The Future of the Military is here

By using TAR, Army soldiers are able to access information without the need for bulky gadgets that require using their hands and represent an inconvenient distraction in dangerous situations.  TAR can provide information such as allies or enemies’ location and soldiers’ own position dependent on landmarks in their vision range.

Soldiers are able to access their weapons’ point of view through a wireless connection to a tablet in order to observe their surroundings without losing sight of a target.

“With TAR, Soldiers don’t have to look down at their GPS device. In fact, they no longer need a separate GPS device because, with TAR, the image is in the eyepiece, which is mounted to the Soldier’s helmet in the same way NVG is mounted. So what they would see, is the terrain in front of them, overlaid with a map.” Said Staff Sgt. Ronald Geer, a counterterrorism non-commissioned officer at CERDEC’s Night Vision and Electronics Sensors Directorate.

Tactical Augmented Reality right now as it is, represents a display breakthrough that allows high-quality visuals to fit into a tiny screen. The gadget is currently used in night-vision goggles and features a monochromatic option to be used in daylight. The developing team behind TAR is continuing to work on this technology to reach full-color for daylight viewing, or maybe they had and just haven’t told us…
