Oculus Teases Advanced Hand Tracking Gloves
Oculus recently posted a video that was also featured in a blog post by Michael Abrash, in which you could see some sort of VR gloves for hand tracking.
Oculus is Developing Gloves for VR Hand Tracking
The video reveals a marker-based hand tracking solution with external cameras. “Unfortunately, hands have about 25 degrees of freedom and lots of self-occlusion. Right now, retroreflector-covered gloves and lots of cameras are needed to get to this level of tracking quality.” Abrash said.
Maybe some day, Oculus will be able to fit everything into sensors like the ones you find on the Rift and the Touch, but for the moment you would need a bulky rig around your head. Not very comfortable or consumer-friendly.
We can’t expect any final product like this anytime soon; The Company doesn’t have in its plans to release new hardware in 2017 and so far the Touch controllers are its main priority and form of input for its Virtual Reality experiences in the Oculus Rift, besides it barely released late last year. The hand-tracking gloves are most likely an R&D project that might work or don’t but we sure hope to see something like in the future, and we would love it if it also includes haptic feedback.
Oculus might be considering to release the gloves when it knows it will be the ultimate controller experience, but it would need to add accurate finger tracking to really improve the VR immersion. If Oculus manages to replicate the feel and resistance of objects and surfaces in Virtual Reality it could change entirely the way we play VR games.
We can’t imagine the infinite possibilities of what could be made possible by combining the Touch controllers with hand-tracking gloves, we would finally be touching the world of VR.
