How Firefighters are Using Augmented Reality to Save Lives
Practical applications of augmented reality are still somewhat limited but they are rapidly increasing in scope. One unlikely industry that has recently dived into AR application is firefighting. Several high-tech firefighting departments around the world are fast embracing AR in order to improve their firefighting capabilities.
These departments are mainly utilizing augmented reality and virtual reality technologies in training their firefighting departments. One of the most recent applications was the collaboration between Epson and DJI in a video which showcased the use of gear on-scene by the Menlo Park Fire Department.
The Menlo Fire Department is currently deploying DJI drones in conjunction with the Epson Moverio AR Smart Glasses so as to improve its firefighting capabilities and help save more lives. The use of the Moverio AR Smart Glasses helps firefighters obtain a first-person view of the scene via a transparent display with the transmission coming directly from a built-in camera on the drone. For firefighting purposes, the operator gets a bird’s eye view of the firefighting scene while at the same time keeping track of their drone.
Using both drone and augmented reality technologies in a firefighting environment where the ground view is more restrictive provides first responders with the right information that will be required to make good judgment calls. The fire fighting department is also able to quickly figure out where to send the firefighters first along with where to concentrate their efforts for maximum impact in putting off deadly fires.
Epson’s range of Moverio AR Smart Glasses is mainly focused on the enterprise applications in contrast to other models that are geared towards the consumer market. The company released its award-winning Moverio BT-300 glasses in 2016 and in 2018, it released the Moverio BT-35E Smart Glasses as well as the Redrock Biometrics. Epson has also released an augmented reality app for DJI drone pilots.
