Pimax has been known for its high-resolution virtual reality headsets which are a magnet for the enterprise and detail-focused customers and the company is now launching two new high-performance controllers that will match its new powerful displays and complete its virtual reality package. The company recently launched the Pimax 5K Plus and the Pimax 8K virtual reality headsets following its wildly successful Kickstarter campaign in 2017.

The company has now released the details on its upcoming virtual reality controllers which will come in two versions. These two options have been christened the Sword and Sword Sense. Mass production for the devices will begin “soon” and the Pimax is planning to release them in the second half of this year. While the two input devices differ in features, they both have swappable batteries which can be replaced on the fly. Users therefore don’t have to worry about interrupting or pausing their virtual reality sessions just to recharge their controllers.

Viewed from behind, the Sword series of controllers resemble the hilt of a sword as the name aptly suggests. The company crowdsourced ideas for the style and the features for the VR controllers from its enthusiastic community of backers, most of whom had preferred a thumbstick design. On the other hand, another category of users preferred a trackpad design. To satisfy the demands of both users, Pimax decided to build both designs, resulting in the two controller options.

To use the controllers, users will grasp the grips and then the guard rings will surround their closed palms as their fingers reach for the controls and the triggers. Pimax went through multiple iterations to come up with a suitable controller design that had optimized comfort, weight and balance when it’s grasped.

The standard Sword VR controller comes with trackpads and 6DoF motion tracking capability. The Sword Sense is a higher-end VR controller and packs much more punch including 6DoF motion tracking capabilities, thumbs sticks and touch panels in place of trackpads; it also has sensors that enable the guard rings to detect the movements from all of the user’s five fingers. The two controller options are both compatible with SteamVR 1.0 and 2.0 Lighthouse tracking. Additionally, each of the controllers comes with a 900mAh swappable and rechargeable lithium battery.

For Pimax, the launch of the VR controllers has been the logical step to providing its end users and B2B clients with top-of-the-line virtual reality controllers. The controllers balance nicely in the hands and they also provide a better degree of comfort that many VR enthusiasts will certainly appreciate.

Finally, there is the issue of availability of the Sword controllers. Pimax has stated that the mass production of the standard Sword controllers is slated to begin “soon” and that it plans to ship the controllers “in quantity” during the second half of this year. The pricing for the controllers will also be determined at a later date. The company is yet to divulge any details on its “flagship” high-end Sword Sense controllers but it’s promising to offer buyers package deals for the gear alongside its 5K and 8K headsets which had also experienced longer production delays.
