To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Ghostbusters, Sony will be testing a new Ghostbusters augmented reality experience in Japan. From the 12th of October, Sony will provide enthusiastic fans an opportunity to become Ghostbusters at the Ginza Sony Park located in Tokyo. Participants will be wearing a prototype augmented reality headset and will be led by trainers around the park to exterminate the ghosts that will pop out throughout the venue.

The experience will last from October 12th to December 8th and Sony will be hosting two to four-hour sessions per day of ghostbusting.

Every experience will last about 60 minutes and will be totally free. However, with the augmented reality sessions lasting only 2 to 4 hours per day, the spaces will be extremely limited in spite of the buzz and interest that the event is going to generate.

Participants interested in participating in the experience must sign up and hope that they will be selected via a lottery system. Sony is leaving everything to luck. Only the candidates whose names have been picked will participate in the experience. It is also important to keep in mind that the Ghostbusters augmented reality experience will be entirely in Japanese so if you are a visitor and don’t understand Japanese, you are out of luck.

Sony has dubbed the event a “demo debut” for the new attraction so it is possible it might roll it out beyond Japan.

Augmented Reality Based on the Latest Technology

Sony has also stated that the augmented reality glasses to be used in the Ghostbusters demo debut will be based on the latest AR technology. However, the company did not reveal much detail about this technology.

The limited participation possibilities may also suggest that this will be a test run for Sony’s augmented reality hardware. This is the first time ever that Sony has released an augmented reality hardware prototype.

For more information about the tickets, check out the Ginza Sony Park website and submit your application. Sony is also encouraging interested parties to apply with at least two people. Users must be over the age of 18 to participate and must also be willing to complete a questionnaire alongside the experience.
