Gucci Teams Up with a Snap for Limited-Edition 3D AR Glasses
During the Art Basel held in Miami on Wednesday night, Snap Inc unveiled a film collaboration with Spectacles 3, the filmmaker Harmony Korine and Gucci. A limited edition of the Snap glasses were designed by Gucci and Korine created a short film by using the Spectacles 3 3D glasses overlaid with AR elements. This project is part of Snap’s strategy of testing its Spectacles 3D glasses via limited releases along with its more recent push for elevating the design in the face a strong industry-wide momentum towards AR eyewear.
Snap will be promoting its latest Spectacles glasses via Korine’s arty film dubbed “Spectacles x Gucci”. The design has been hand-painted using highly saturated tones, a color palette that is the trademark of Harmony’s paintings and photography work.
The design also draws from Korine’s new film shot on Spectacles 3 and which has been enhanced with 3D effects that were specifically created for the film. The film is set in Miami and features various panda furies as well as a guy wearing headphones with a hot-dog costumes and various other pastel-colored Snap effects. Snap has described the film as an “unbridled landscape of sound and color”.
The film content might not necessarily be for everyone but it is inspired by a novel concept. It combines the first-person point of view as well as the 3D effects to enable the AR glasses to inhabit its own hyper-personal universe. The film has helped inspire the multi-sensory experience of Duck Duck, where the wearer is able to literally walk into the world as they are watching it.
The Spectacles 3 3D glasses have a dual-camera setup that allows users to capture their world in 3D. Although the wearer can’t see the stereoscopic 3D, they are able to get the feeling of depth when they view the videos via Snap and move their phone around. The most important benefit is its 3D filter feature. Users can overlay these onto the real-world objects allowing them to interact with and even move behind various objects including tables, cars as well as any other object that might be on the scene. From an aesthetic standpoint, the Snap glasses are also more fashion-forward than the previous models.
This is not the first time that Snap is collaborating with Korine as the filmmaker has previously worked with a Gucci-themed Miami Christmas campaign. It’s still not apparent whether Snap will sell the Gucci spectacles but users can virtually experiment with them via the Snapchat app. Snap uses the Lens Studio to create all its 3D effects and these will be made available to all Spectacles 3 users from December 6th.
