Adobe Announces the Acquisition of Oculus’ ‘Medium’ Sculpting App
Oculus has always ensured that its Touch Controllers can be useful in creative applications in VR partly due to the proliferation of creativity apps such as the sculpting app Medium. Medium is a sculpting software that has proven quite popular as a professional design tool. Multimedia and creativity software giant, Adobe, has today announced its acquisition of the Oculus Medium app.
Adobe has its own extensive suite of creativity, design and multimedia software including Illustrator, Photoshop, Substance, Dimension and a constellation of other software tools. Its software tools are the first port of call for many creative professionals. With the incorporation of Oculus Medium into its suite of creative tools, Adobe is demonstrating the capability of the VR software to enhance productivity in various use-cases.
Medium has been a core creative tool in the virtual reality space, helping push the limits of creative and technical boundaries of 3D modeling according to Adobe’s VP for 3D and Immersive Sebastien Deguy. Medium enables users or creatives to sculpt, model and paint objects in the immersive environment. Creatives can use the tool to sculpt environments, characters, objects, expressive works of art and many other creations in VR. For Adobe, the integration of the Oculus Medium’s technology and tools will be a major contributor to the software giant’s 3D and immersive strategy.
The acquisition however casts a shadow on whether the Oculus Medium platform will continue to be a freely available virtual reality app. Currently, the app is sold on the Oculus Store but it is free with every Oculus Touch that comes bundled with every Oculus Rift S headset. The Oculus Blog however assures that “nothing is changing” for avid Medium users following today’s acquisition. Oculus is also promising that the app will see more features, improvements as well as other developments from Adobe in the coming year as the VR sculpting app continues to evolve under the new ownership.
The Adobe investment in 3D and AR allows Substance and Medium teams to collaborate on the next generation of 3D tools. If you have been a Medium fan, expects some new changes to the app in the coming year.
