The announcement has fallen at a time when Oppo is in the process of diversifying its product portfolio. The Oppo AR glasses will be a step forward in the company’s bid to expand its footprint into the augmented reality space which the company has yet to tap into even as augmented reality and virtual reality shape up to be the next big tech revolution.
But OPPO’s foray into augmented reality is occurring at a time when the immersive industry in general is facing uncertain times amidst great promise. While Google put a stop to its Google Glasses experiment, there still exists bold efforts to build the dream AR device in spite of the difficulty of building ideal AR glasses that will balance comfort, privacy and portability.
That is why OPPO’s foray into AR is coming as a total surprise. The company’s inaugural innovation-centric Inno Day 2019 was expected to put an emphasis on the expected stuff such as 5G but the company pulled a complete surprise by unveiling its foray into AR/VR which are currently regarded as the potential biggest beneficiaries in the roll out of next-gen 5G networks. The 5G networks promise fast and wide bandwidth that will make it a lot easier for the virtual reality headgear to communicate with other connected devices such as PCs, smartphones and gaming consoles among others without the encumbrance of cumbersome cabling.
During the reveal, OPPO didn’t go into much detail about the technical specifications of its new augmented reality glasses. The company has suggested that the glasses are still in the development and prototyping stage. OPPO has, however, revealed that the new eyewear will feature four cameras -one HD, two fisheye and one Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera-that will provide owners with a comprehensive view of the world in numerous layers and angles. Apart from the impeccable vision specs, the AR glasses also feature 3D surround which will be useful when the company launches its AR Content, Game and Service platforms.
During the conference, OPPO demonstrated the smart glasses in action. Apart from just seeing, the AR system was also able to detect hand gestures to control objects that are on the screen. The glasses were also not physically tethered to any computer, a feature that could make the ultimate augmented reality glasses, offering users a standalone experience without bothersome cabling. One thing that is clearly apparent from the reveal is that the glasses will be bulky.
OPPO AR glasses are yet to be branded and could help position the Chinese tech company as more than just a smartphone company. The company sees 5G networks as one of the key elements to its growing business in various markets including augmented reality and IoT.
