Oculus Quest 2 to Get a Built-in Fitness Tracker Known as ‘Oculus Move’
The just launched Oculus Quest 2 headset is set to get an official and cross-app fitness tracker known as Oculus Move.
Oculus Move was announced towards the start of the Facebook Connect keynote last week. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed it soon after announcing the new Oculus Quest 2 headset. An image of the service shows tracking stats such as the number of calories burned, the minutes spent as well as the intensity of the workouts across various apps such as OhShape, Beat Saber and The Thrill of the Fight.
The app will even allow users to set up their goals and see their workout history. The Facebook boss said that the tech company would begin testing out the feature on Oculus Quest later in the year. So far, no details have been divulged yet on how the fitness service will track the calorie stats.
Fitness has been one of the unexpected but positive impacts of VR immersion, particularly with high-adrenaline VR apps such as Beat Saber, Box VR and OhShape among others. In games such as Beat Saber and Holopoint, this fitness aspect comes amidst fun core game mechanics that keep players engrossed in the VR experience for much longer thereby helping them burn more calories over long playing sessions. Players in these games have actually been able to successfully lose weight while having tons of immersive fun. Besides these high-adrenaline apps, there are also lots of dedicated VR fitness apps, including a subscription-based one known as Supernatural.
Not everyone will be pleased with the Move competition though. There is the independent VR fitness group, YUR, with its own cross-tracking app for Quest via the sideloading app SideQuest which now has to contend with serious competition from Oculus Move.
Which VR fitness apps are you currently using? Are you planning to use Oculus Move? What are some of the features which you would want to see in the new fitness tracker? Let us know in the comment section.
