The App Lab for Oculus Quest was launched in February this year to enable VR developers to bypass the stringent Oculus content curation process and launch apps on the Quest platform. There are now 295 apps and games on App Lab which eclipses the total number of apps that are available on the official Quest store.

This latest count is based on the submissions tracked by App Lab DB. App Lab has been around for only four months and its app count already surpasses that of the official Quest store which has 282 apps as of the time of writing. The official Quest store has been around for over two years. This count shows there are a large number of app developers who wish to be on the official Quest store and who are simply not getting past Oculus’ brutally stringent vetting process.

The Quest apps on App Lab are functionally ‘unlisted’ (on unsearchable) in the main Oculus Quest store. However, these apps still have a normal store page that is directly accessible through a URL and is installed with a single click once a user is logged in just as the other Oculus Quest apps found in the main store. The difference between the App Lab apps and the Oculus apps in the main store is that Oculus selects the apps to add to its main store based on qualitative criteria. On the other hand, the apps in App Lab simply have to be technically sound and don’t have to meet any other qualitative thresholds.

Considering that App Lab was launched on February 3rd and already has 295 apps, it means that Oculus has been approving 2.4 apps per day on average to App Lab. The first two months of App Lab were quite slow so it appears like the approvals of apps to App Lab picked up steam in the last two months.

The main Oculus Quest store has 282 apps over a period of more than 2 years, averaging to 0.38 apps added every day since its launch date.

For some context, there are now about 1,800 Oculus PC applications. The number of Go applications stands at 1,800 while the number of SteamVR applications is at approximately 4,900. These two platforms have, however, been around for much longer and none of them has the tough curation measures that Oculus imposes on Quest applications on the standalone VR headset’s main store.
