Which Were the Most Successful PC VR Games in 2021?
Every year, Valve publishes an overview of the most successful Steam games. These include the top sellers, new releases, most played VR games, and much more. The list for this year is out so let’s see the top PC VR games that made the charts in 2021.
Valve does not provide any specific details or the turnover figures for its VR titles so the top titles of every year are based on the total turnover and are classified into four categories, namely: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The categories divide the top 90 titles as follows: –
- Platinum: 1st to 12th place
- Gold: 13th to 24th place
- Silver: 25th to 40th place
- Bronze: 41st to 90th place
This list only ranks the VR-exclusive titles along with the standalone VR ports like the Skyrim VR. The titles that support both virtual reality and monitors like Phasmophobia and No Man’s Sky aren’t included in the rankings. Finally, the order of the titles within each category is entirely random.
Top New Releases in 2021
Steam posts for the past year have been highlighting monthly lists of the Top 20 games that are released every month throughout the year. Steam has now put these lists in one convenient spot. Steam has also created a top 25 list of new releases throughout the year. The list factors in the thousands of game releases in 2021 and picks the top 25 out of these according to the revenue generated in the first two weeks after the launch.
The platinum category has the usual long-running culprits including Superhot VR, Beat Saber and Arizona Sunshine.
In the blog post, Valve stated that more than 500 new VR-exclusive games were released in 2021. However, none of these new games made it to the platinum category. Compared to 2020, only one new virtual reality game is in the front runners – Into The Radius that appeared in Early Access in 2019 and left this status in 2020.
No major shifts have been seen in the top-selling titles which did not bode too well for VR market in 2021. This is a predicament that SteamVR also shares with the PlayStation Store where the same top-selling virtual reality titles have dominated the charts for years. The older VR titles are still the most successful VR games and we are yet to see a major breach by newcomers.
The co-op shooter After The Fall, a spiritual successor to Arizona Sunshine, recorded fewer sales in 2021 than the five-year-old virtual reality classic. However, it has been around for just about a month.
You Can Experience Top Titles in VR Thanks to Mods
The only purely virtual reality game that made it to the Steam top sellers is Half-Life: Alyx which has been placed in the Bronze category (41st to 90th place).
Three titles with official VR support also made their way to the top sellers and to the rankings of PC games with the highest numbers of simultaneous players. These are The Forest, Plasmophobia, and No Man’s Sky.
Based on gross income, Rec Room made it to the top early access graduates.
Some of the super hits on Steam such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Valheim, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and GTA 56 can also be experienced in virtual reality thanks to VR mods.
