Survey: Quest 2 Accounted for 80% of Headset Sales in 2021
According to the research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), Meta Quest 2 accounted for 78% of all the virtual reality and augmented reality headset sales in 2021. 2021 also saw a 92.1% year-on-year growth in the market compared to the previous year and up to 50% of the sales happened in the fourth quarter of 2021. This was the first time since 2016, at the height of the immersive hype, that the industry saw this level of growth.
The IDC says the Quest 2 headset saw 8.7 million sales in 2021 and half of these sales occurred in the fourth quarter of 2021. The report says some 11.2 million XR (AR and VR) headsets were shipped in 2021 of which Quest 2 accounted for 78%. This represented the largest growth in the industry since 2016 when the original Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PlayStation VR came to the market.
The remaining 22% of the sales were split between the numerous AR and VR companies. DPVR, which sells its headsets mostly to enterprise clients accounted for 5.1% of the headset sales in 2021 while Pico had 4.5% of the market sales. The remaining 12.4% of the market was shared by the remaining XR firms including Valve, Sony, and several other smaller players.
Taken all together, the headset sales were dominated by standalone headsets. A similar bump in sales was also seen when the original Oculus Quest launched about two years ago.
IDC is forecasting that the industry will see sales of up to 50 million units by 2026. The research firm estimates that up to 30 million of these units will go to consumers with up to 20 million going to enterprise users.
