All the five paintings shown in the app were stolen and have never been found. The Stolen Art Gallery allows you to see the digitized versions of the paintings up close with a Meta Quest headset. It even features spoken descriptions of the artworks through a virtual watch. It is like going on a walking tour of a museum.

The VR app was developed by the Brazilian tech firm Compass UOL. There is also a mobile version of the app for both iOS and Android smartphones. However, the Meta Quest experience immerses you into the virtual tour like no other 2D interface would. Viewers enter a sparse and dark-walled art gallery and can have an experience akin to approaching a real painting in a real art gallery. The experience can be had alongside friends and other viewers inside the same virtual session.

Instead of mimicking the cluttered atmosphere of a typical museum, the developers chose a minimalist approach in which viewers are immersed in a sparse and dark space where the only thing they can focus their eyes and attention on is the art piece on display.

The immersive virtual gallery experience gives viewers advantages over a real-world museum. For instance, users can come very close to the painting and experience it up close than would be possible in real life. Viewers can even create sketches and notes that can be seen by others. The VR gallery is a solo experience so you won’t have to grapple with crowds and other distractions that you would experience in a real museum. You can also view the art gallery anywhere and at any time.

Viewers in the gallery will use a custom avatar and a number of tools to interact with each of the five pieces of art. The gallery even features a magnifying glass for inspecting the art up close. A virtual tour guide gives viewers extra details on every painting on display. The virtual reality version of the app gives users extra options such as markers with which they can make their own additions to every art piece.

You can download the VR version of The Stolen Art Museum on Meta Quest. You need to sign up to access it. The app is 100% free. Outside VR, you can also experience the gallery app in standard 2D via iOS and Android apps. The is available in both English and Portuguese.
