Apple’s much-talked-about mixed-reality headset is expected to launch in the Spring of 2023. Bloomberg is now reporting that the headset will be powered by an operating system called xrOS.

The Bloomberg report says Apple recently changed the name of the operating system internally, from the widely reported ‘realityOS’ to ‘xrOS’. The report quotes people privy to the information who did not wish to be quoted since the XR project is still shrouded in secrecy.

According to the report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the XR designation in the ‘xrOS’ name stands for extended reality. This is in line with Apple’s long-range goals of taking this route rather than that of virtual reality like Meta. It is expected that Apple’s headset will be pricey with the first generation expected to feature premium hardware. Meta has its own high-end VR hardware with mixed reality functions, the Meta Quest Pro.

With many hardware manufacturers now embracing video passthrough, it is expected that most future mixed reality headsets will have some form of augmented reality functions. As the chips and technology evolve, future mixed reality products will have form factors close to those of conventional sunglasses and prescription glasses. There are even companies that are working on smart contact lenses that will offer mixed reality functions.

According to the Bloomberg report, Apple heads of engineering for its Keynote, Pages, Notes, and Apple News are currently engaged in the mixed reality project suggesting that Apple has marshaled its core app teams to finish the headset experience before its debut next year.

The xrOS name has come from a trademark filed by the shell company Deep Dive LLC which has trademarked the name of the operating system across the globe. This shell company is linked to another shell company although there is a very probability that Apple is behind the two shell companies. Gurman cautions that the final name of Apple’s XR operating system could still be realityOS or another new name altogether in spite of the use of the xrOS name within the company.
