The free-to-play virtual reality multiplayer hit Gorilla Tag has now grossed $26 million in revenues from in-app purchases on App Lab.

Gorilla Tag was created by the developer Another Axiom and came into Early Access on Steam for PC VR as well as on SideQuest for the Quest platform in February 2021. In March 2021, it was launched on App Lab for Quest. By November of the same year, it had notched up 1.5 million players and started rolling out in-app purchases on Quest, giving players a selection of some cosmetic items to buy in-game.

The game was in App Lab until late 2022 when it finally transitioned into the full Quest Store on December 15. The game is still freely available on both Quest and Steam and it derives all its revenues from in-app purchases.

It looks like offering the game for free and cashing in on the in-app purchases has a been profitable strategy if the game’s revenues are anything to go by. The game raked in $26 million in in-app purchases over a period of 13 months when it was on App Lab. The title has also seen its player numbers continue to soar. In an interview with GamesBeat, Another Axiom revealed that Gorilla Tag had hit a peak monthly user count of 2.3 million players. Additionally, some 760,000 players played Gorilla Day on Christmas, 2022.

The numbers are impressive and by VR standards, Gorilla Tag has been incredibly successful. In the GamesBeat interview, Another Axiom COO David Yee stated that the success of Gorilla Tag bodes well for the larger VR industry and that the company is keen to share this message in the broader industry to encourage developers to see the potential of VR.

Gorilla Tag is still free to join on Quest and PC VR through Steam. You can sign up today and try it out.
