Google’s Geospatial Creator enables you to create world-scale augmented reality experiences in a matter of minutes.

Google has launched its new Augmented Reality (AR) platform called Geospatial Creator.  The tool allows for the visualization, creation, and publishing of immersive content directly from Unity to Adobe Aero in a matter of minutes.

Google’s ARCore is an augmented reality platform that gives creators and developers simple and powerful tools for building world-scale and room-scale immersive experiences on the 1.4 billion Android devices.

Google says from 2022 to date, it has extended the ARCore Geospatial AI coverage to more than 100 countries from 87 thanks to its Visual Positioning System and the expansion of Street View coverage that will help developers to build and publish immersive location-based experiences which are much more transformative and robust.

How Google’s Geospatial Creator Works

Google launched Geospatial Creator in response to users’ need for powerful resources and to enable them to create, visualize and deploy AR experiences across the globe.

With the Geospatial Creator, pretty much anyone can easily visualize, design and publish immersive content that is anchored on the world, in a matter of minutes direct from familiar platforms like Unity and Adobe Aero.

How Geospatial Creator Works

The Geospatial Creator can be used by developers and creators to create and enrich 3D maps and enrich these with Augmented Reality elements in a view similar to Google Street View and Google Earth.

The Geospatial Creator will enable users to insert buildings, landscapes, objects, and figures and enhance these with animations, sounds, and interaction options.

It is also possible to personalize existing maps from Google Maps using custom content. These maps can subsequently be integrated and shared via Adobe Aero and Unity.

Content placed with the Geospatial Creator can be visualized using a tablet or smartphone that is ARCore-compatible. This enables users to view and interact with the content using an integrated camera.

These capabilities are available across all the supported Android as well as iOS devices. Because the content is spatially anchored, it will remain in the same position in space irrespective of the movement or change in perspective by viewers.

What You Can Do with Geospatial Creator

The Geospatial Creator is not yet publicly available. Select users and partners that have early access can use it to create the project previews of what will be realizable with Geospatial Creator.

The Singapore Tourism Board, for instance, is using the tool to create an immersive guided tour of the iconic landmarks in the city. It features the city mascot, Merli, showing and explaining the individual spots of the city in an augmented reality tour, including some scenes from the past that allow you to understand the city’s past. The tour starts with the famous Merlion Park and visitors are even engaged in an AR symphony performance at Victoria Theater and Concert Hall. The video below shows a preview of this experience. The full tour will be launched this summer.

Google Arts & Culture is also collaborating with Global Street Art along with three world-renowned artists in a project that digitally augments murals in Los Angeles, London, and Mexico City through augmented reality.
