Quest 3 Now Showing As Supported by All Store Apps
A ‘Quest 3’ device is suddenly appearing as being supported on all apps, visible on the in-store apps in virtual reality.
Although Meta will be releasing the successor to the Quest 2 headset this year, it is yet to formally unveil the headset although the leaks have emerged over the past two years including a notable leak by YouTuber and XR hardware analyst Brad Lynch which featured schematics of the headset.
The ‘Quest 3’ can now be viewed on all in-store apps in VR in the More Info section on Quest Store, appearing after the Quest Pro headset. However, when the Quest Store is viewed from the mobile app, it appears as ‘New Quest’. Viewed from the web browser, it appears as ‘Unknown’.
This suggests that the headset might be revealed soon, at an upcoming event like the Quest Gaming Showcase. However, UploadVR says this is probably just a mistake.
In October 2022, Meta CFO stated that the company’s “next generation consumer Quest” would be launching “later next year.” In February this year, Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the same in his timeline. Meta has previously used the Connect event to launch previous headsets including the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. The annual event usually takes place every October.
The name “Quest 3” has appeared in two other instances in the past, including a Mark Zuckerberg interview and at Stratechery last year. In the Stratechery interview, Zuckerberg stated that the headset would be priced “in the price range of $300, $400, or $500” zone.
In September last year, YouTuber SadlyItsBradley (Brad Lynch) leaked apparent schematics of the headset which showed a device without either eye or face tracking. However, the headset shown in the Bradley leak featured pancake lenses that give it a slim design. It also features a depth sensor for advanced mixed-reality functions.
A Meta internal roadmap presentation was also leaked in March this year where the company’s VP of VR Mark Rabkin reportedly informed staff that the Quest 3 headset will be half as thick and twice as powerful as the Quest headset but cost “a bit more.”
According to Rabkin, the Quest headset will feature a “Smart Guardian” with a primary focus on room-aware mixed reality along with 41 new apps and games. In March this year, Meta CTO stated that the Quest 2 headset won’t be phased out any time soon and will still be sold alongside the Quest 3 headset. The Quest 2 headset is likely to remain in the market until 2024 when Meta will release the more affordable 2024 headset which the company also mentioned in its recent roadmap.
