PSVR 2 Sales Have Surpassed Those of the Original
In spite of recent talks of unsatisfactory sales, PSVR 2 sales have already outpaced those of the original PSVR over the same corresponding launch phase.
Reports recently emerged that Sony’s second-generation headset the PlayStation VR 2 was off to a slow start and that company would be cutting down its production numbers. A few months ago, Bloomberg reported that the headset sold only 270,000 units globally at launch against a target of 2 million sales and that Sony had, as a result, decided to curtail output after disappointing pre-order launch numbers.
The negative reports appear to have prompted Sony to release its actual sales numbers which show that the headset is indeed doing quite well and that sales have already surpassed those of the original PSVR over the corresponding period.
According to Sony’s figures, the PlayStation VR 2 headset sold close to 600,000 units within the first six weeks after its launch on February 22nd this year. The original PlayStation VR had an impressive performance in its own right, selling 550,000 units during the corresponding launch phase in 2016.
Sony shared data on headset sales at its Business Segment Meeting 2023. While the sales figures aren’t far apart, they show the PSVR 2 headset surpassed the original one by 8% over the same launch phase.
The sales figures have beaten the market research firm IDC’s forecasts of 270,000 units that were cited by the Bloomberg article in March.
IDC had forecast that the headset would sell just 270,000 units between the launch date on February 22nd and the end of March 2023. The estimate took into account the same launch window as Sony’s official figures, just short of five and a half weeks. Sony actually sold twice as many units.
The PSVR 2 sales graph is flattening, corresponding to the attraction of its initial strong game lineup which has gradually flagged over the past few weeks. However, there are some upcoming titles that might boost the headset’s fortunes such as Behemoth (from the developers of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners 2) and Beat Saber from the Meta-owned Beat Games. Additional titles expected to be added include Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord from Ndreams (developed of Fracked) along with the planned virtual reality mode for the new Resident Evil 4 remake.
PlayStation VR 2 is freely available in several markets. This is in contrast to not so long ago when it was only available in a few countries that were not supplied through PlayStation Direct. This has been crucial in the distribution of the virtual reality headset and has opened up extra opportunities for prospective buyers to try it out before making a purchase.
Sony is also bullish about its PS5 console with many of the supply chain issues now getting resolved. PS5 sales to retailers (B2B) from the second quarter of the 2023 fiscal year are most likely already at par with those of the PS4 over the same corresponding quarters in 2016, according to a Sony statement.
The original PSVR headset launched in 2016 and only hit a million sales after 8 months. The PSVR headset reached 5 million sales after the 2019 holiday sales. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki is confident that the headset will outperform the original PSVR.https://virtualrealitytimes.com/2023/05/27/psvr-2-sales-have-surpassed-those-of-the-original/https://virtualrealitytimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/PlayStation-VR-2-headset-600x335.pnghttps://virtualrealitytimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/PlayStation-VR-2-headset-150x90.pngUncategorizedIn spite of recent talks of unsatisfactory sales, PSVR 2 sales have already outpaced those of the original PSVR over the same corresponding launch phase.
