According to a report by Road to VR, the Oculus Quest headsets are no longer being sold internationally. The international deliveries for Facebook’s Rift S headsets also appear to either have been stopped or paused.

For much of this year, both Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift S have been out of stock or in long backorder queues due to the coronavirus pandemic that had an adverse impact on the production schedules in China. The availability of both virtual reality headsets improved significantly over the subsequent two months. The Oculus Quest headset is now suddenly out of stock throughout the globe this week which has fueled rumors that Facebook might announce its new Oculus Quest 2, which has been in the works for some time and whose images leaked out a few weeks ago, next week during the Facebook Connect (formerly Oculus Connect).

Road to VR checked out stock availability for the direct purchases from the Oculus.com website for the Oculus Quest (64GB) and Oculus Quest (128GB) and for the Rift S headset for all the regions where the two virtual reality headsets are sold.

According to the Road to VR report, the stock for Oculus Quest (both 64Gb and 128GB) went from being fairly steady in most of the regions down to complete unavailability across the globe. However, the Rift S headsets is still largely available although with a backorder of just over one week in most of the regions.

The sudden lack of Quest stocks across all regions globally is coming just a week to the Facebook Connect set to be held on September 16th where the VR community is anticipating some major announcements, including possibly, the launch of Oculus Quest 2. The Oculus Quest headsets are not only unavailable on the Oculus.com website but also among several third-party retailers where the Quest headset is listed as ‘Discontinued’.

The Facebook Connect, previously Oculus Connect, is the tech giant’s annual VR-focused event which connects developers and shares news on the latest VR developments. Many are speculating that the coincidental of the unavailability of Quest headsets globally just week to the Facebook Connect conference might be a sign that Facebook is planning to unveil the Quest 2 next week during its annual event.

Leaked photos of the Oculus 2 headset surfaced online in July. Then last week, there was a Walmart listing for an Oculus headset which had the code name ‘Point Reyes’ with a $300 price point for the $64GB model and a price of $400 for the 256GB model.

COVID-19 Pandemic Disrupted Stock

Stocks for the Oculus headsets were severely disrupted early this year by the coronavirus pandemic which led to a lengthy backorder lasting weeks. The shortages had promoted Facebook to begin selling refurbished versions of its original Rift headset which it had discontinued the previous year. The stock availability of other virtual reality headsets such as Valve Index were also affected by the pandemic although the stocks have been improving in the recent months.
