BMW Has Filed NFT and Metaverse Trademarks
BMW has filed US trademarks for a long that is connected to digital collectibles, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), and the metaverse.
The US trademark filing is for digital files that are authenticated using nonfungible tokens. It also covers various virtual goods such as clothing, cars, headgear, and toys. It also covers simulations, virtual worlds along with related hardware.
New data shows that there has been a sharp rise in trademark applications for cryptocurrencies, nonfungible tokens (NFTs), as well as metaverse virtual goods and services. Some of these applications have been by automakers to explore the marketing and experiential potential of the metaverse. Hyundai, for instance, filed trademark applications for NFT-related merch and services in June this year. Ford recently filed 19 trademark applications related to the metaverse.
BMW is yet to showcase a metaverse or web3 project in spite of its recent trademark applications. The BMW Museum of Sound recently dropped an NFT collection on OpenSea which celebrates the sound of BMW engines. However, the museum’s collection did not feature BMW branding and seems to have been launched by a Middle Eastern subsidiary or a distribution partner.
BMW has also been involved in a blockchain-based rewards program that was launched in South Korea. BMW has used blockchain technology for supply chain traceability and backed Vendia, an enterprise technology startup, in a $30 million Series B funding round.
There have been web3 projects by other automakers. These include Skoda’s Skodaverse, Chevrolet’s Corvette NFTs, and Lamborghini’s “The Epic Road Trip” NFT project, its third.
