A Vienna-based startup has developed simulators that transform any car into an immersive XR driving simulator.

The startup, Nekonata XR Technologies (NXRT) develops mixed reality simulators that convert any ride into an immersive driving simulator. The system merges virtual reality with the real environment to generate an immersive driving experience.

The simulator system is called “XQ Avatar” and is deployable on any vehicle. It can be used to perform virtual test drives quickly and seamlessly in the salesrooms of car dealerships. The vehicle is set up with the front tires on a small platform to allow for rotary movements that simulate a realistic driving experience. As a result, during the simulation, the steering wheel is operated as if one is driving in normal traffic without having to grapple with locking tires.

To go on a test drive in the simulator, you sit in the vehicle cabin and put on the virtual reality headset. The headset has a stereoscopic camera that captures the real-world environment.

Like in Varjo’s VR cockpit, the mixed reality algorithm in this headset makes use of the recorded images to merge the virtual and real environments.

The XQ Avatar system allows the driver to see the entire cockpit of the vehicle, including the dashboard, steering wheel, and the driver’s real hands. They will only see the virtual environment when they look through the vehicle’s windows.

This immersive car simulator can be used by car manufacturers in advanced car systems. Potential customers can strap on the headset to familiarize themselves with the advanced driving assistance systems in the vehicle.  Users can directly test out the augmented reality head-up display that projects digital information in the driver’s field of view or functionalities such as the brake assistant.

The mixed reality system can also be used in training train track workers as well as machine operators.

The startup also has the Train Driver Simulator that was built for training upcoming train drivers on driving and maintaining trains.

The simulator is mainly used in simulating scenarios and operations that rarely happen in real life, which could be dangerous or which might result in serious consequences in case they are incorrectly operated.
