Go For Launch: Mercury Built from Scratch by a Single Amateur

The game is set in the early 1960s and follows the progress of NASA’s first manned space program, Project Mercury. Go For Launch: Mercury is about to become the first game to combine an accurate, detailed, and fully controllable spaceflight simulator with VR allowing players to experience first-hand and very realistic what the early pioneers of spaceflight experienced.

Virtual Reality is entirely optional as GFL: Mercury also has support for standard monitors, but you can’t possibly compare both experiences.

GFL: Mercury was designed from the ground up by Joe Chisholm, an amateur that asked himself how hard it could be to make a VR video game. It turns out it was much harder than he thought, and 2 years after starting on this project he is still making great efforts to finish it by itself.

Chisholm wants the game to be as accurate and authentic as possible. He intends to offer it as an entertainment project but also as an educational product, one that can be used by schools and colleges to educate students in astronomy, spaceflight, and history.

According to the official website, the game features:

  • “7 fully functioning, interactive spacecraft interiors and exteriors. Each individually crafted to accurately portray the changes in design and loadout.
  • Every switch, every control, every light, and the button will function exactly as in the original spacecraft.
  • 7 complete playable missions from the Mercury program (including the canceled Freedom 7II).
  • Detailed models of the Atlas and Redstone rockets on historically accurate launch pads (and the ability to witness test launches from the ground!).
  • A full-scale recreation of the earth as seen from low orbit.
  • A virtual recreation of mission control including the control room, spacecraft hangar, and pilot’s office.”

As the development process continues, the space simulation game can get even better. For more information check the official website. Buy the alpha version from Steam, Oculus Home, or Viveport. You can also get full access to builds via the Indiegogo campaign.
