The developer ILMxLab in collaboration with Oculus and Lucasfilm have this week released a new trailer for its upcoming virtual reality game Vader Immortal: Star Wars VR Series. Apart from unveiling the haunting new trailer, the trio have also given a detail of the game’s plot and revealed the various virtual reality platforms that it will hit. Some of the voice talents picked up by the project have also been revealed. This will be the first episode in a trilogy.

When details about Vader Immortal once floated around awhile ago, the virtual reality game was pitched as an exclusively Oculus Quest game. The game will still remain an Oculus Exclusive but its availability has expanded to other Oculus devices including Oculus Rift and the upcoming Oculus Rift S.

While the teaser trailer is finally here, details about the game are still scanty. The trio did however divulge details on the plot so we now know the game will mostly take place on Mustafar before the happenings of A New Hope.

The new trailer teases the story in Vader Immortal and gives us a first real glimpse of what the terrifying lightsaber combat looks like. A lot is not yet known about the protagonist in the game but we at least know that he will be a captain of a smuggling ship name the Windfall. The ship will eventually be captured by the Imperial Forces and is hauled to Mustafar where Vader himself awaits.

You will play the smuggler who is operating close to Vader’s home planet called Mustafar. The game is a trilogy. In episode one, you will be captured by Vader and hauled back to his base. You’ll be able to explore this base with the assistance of your trusted droid named ZOE3. All this occurs between the Revenge of the Sixth and A New Hope. Here is a little trivia: Maya Rudolph plays the droid and helps guide you through the story!

The episode will last anywhere from 45 minutes to one hour to complete and along the way, you will get hold of the lightsaber which you can use to fight off the stormtroopers. Finally, you will have to face Vader himself who needs you for some specific task. It’s not yet clear what Vader will want to do with you as we don’t know the full details of the plot but you will find out soon enough when the game is eventually released. That will also give you an opportunity to get to know Mustafar and its people.

The game has a movie-like quality about it and feels more like an interactive film more than a fully-fledged virtual reality game. Apart from the plot of the story, you can also immerse yourself into the Lightsaber Dojo where you can practice and hone your skills with the lightsaber.

Another interesting reveal from the event was that much of the game has been derived from concepts that had been disregarded from the previous film during the course of its production. The plot in Vader Immortal will therefore be as close as possible to a plot that you’d find in a movie.

Vader Immortal has been under development for several years and will finally be released sometime in the course of this year. The pricing details have not yet been disclosed. The episode one will be available Oculus headsets-on both Rift and Quest- before the summer.
