Source Claims VR Version of Resident Evil 8 is Coming Soon
The Resident Evil fansite Biohazard Declassified’s rumor mills are milling with new information about Resident Evil 8. The new rumors reportedly come from someone who took directly part in Capcom’s Ambassador Playtest or who is close to someone in the playtest, according to the article.
The author describes the new information as “pure speculation based on information that could or could not be true” and that this information might also change between the playtests and the actual full release of the title.
The “leak” includes a lot of information about the gameplay of the 2021 horror title Resident Evil 8: The Village including the Enemies, Playtest Segment Environment, Boss Fight, Weapons, Inventory and a Mysterious Old Women. Finally, there is this sentence which might be of great interest to VR enthusiasts: –
Finally, they said a VR version of Resident Evil Village will happen, but they won’t make that announcement until Sony is ready.
A VR version of Resident Evil 8: The Village would be great news for virtual reality since blockbusters are rarely available for the relatively nascent virtual reality technology. The Resident Evil 7 was PlayStation VR’s flagship title. Should part 8 also come in virtual reality, it will also be playable on PlayStation VR as the new-gen PS5 is backwards compatible wit the first-generation PSVR.
We are still in the dark as to whether a PSVR 2 will materialize just in time for the blockbuster. At the moment, Sony is not talking virtual reality. Perhaps that might change as additional details emerge about Resident Evil 8 which is slated for release this August.
The VR Success With Resident Evil
When it hit the market in January 2017, Resident Evil 7 was the flagship title for Sony’s PlayStation VR headset. Many more games have been added in the subsequent years. However, no subsequent title has attracted much attention on PSVR like Resident Evil 7 did when it fascinated hundreds of thousands of PSVR fans upon its release.
However, during Resident Evil 8’s PS5 unveiling, no mention was made of a possible VR version even though PS5 continues to support the old PSVR headset. Might a VR announcement be coming soon? It remains to be seen.
Resident Evil 8 VR Had Been Planned for Originally Anyway
It wouldn’t be a big surprise if a VR version of Resident Evil 8: The Village might be in the offing. Even before the first trailer of the title was unveiled, rumors had been milling about on a possible VR launch. The Gematsu website had claimed to have uncovered a source confirming PSVR support for the title.
There is also the Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem who has correctly predicted various details of the game including the setting and the name even before the RE8 trailer and who regularly comments on the development of the Resident Evil 8 following Sony’s disclosure of the PS5 on Twitter.
It did support PSVR, it if still will is to be seen. I believe it will, but for the record as recent as four months ago RE8 was planned for cross-gen, but that changed within the last four months. So to be seen. I believe it'll be, but to see how it shakes out. https://t.co/ZQ0A4ATerL

According to Dusk Golem, Capcom worked on a cross-gen version of Resident Evil 8 until just a few months ago but abandoned the project in favor of graphic optimizations for Next Gen. At the moment, the title has only bee announced for PC as well as for Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen gaming consoles.
That now abandoned next-gen version of RE8 definitely supported Sony’s PSVR according to Dusk Golem. However, the leaker has no idea on whether the now announced next-gen version will also continue supporting virtual reality. The game has been graphically redesigned for next-gen consoles. In August, we expect news on the Resident Evil 8 and perhaps an official confirmation of a VR mode.
