Apple Could Be Planning to Build Its Own Metaverse According to Job Listing
An Apple job listing shows the company is planning to hire engineers to build a 3D world for its upcoming, but yet to be announced, mixed reality headset.
Apple’s work on the augmented and virtual reality headset was first reported in early 2021. Trademark filings that have since emerged in the past few months show that the headset may be called “Reality One” or “Reality Pro.”
According to job listings by Apple’s Technology Development Group, the tech giant is planning to recruit talents that will create content for its headset. The job listings are for various positions such as software producers who will create visual effects for virtual reality and augmented reality environments or staff that will develop a video service using 3D content.
There is also a listing for the position of a senior software engineer to be in charge of graphics and simulation. According to this listing, this person should have an “experience in 3D graphics” to steer building a simulation and synthetic data pipeline for machine learning training.
Apple’s AR/VR headset will have 12 cameras that will display a real-time video of the surrounding environment. The Information has previously reported that the headset could cost as much as $3,000.
Apple boss Tim Cook, while avoiding the use of the term “metaverse” has previously shown an interest in augmented reality, describing it as a “profound technology that will affect everything.” He has also shown some skepticism about virtual reality stating that it is not a way for one to live their whole life.
Bloomberg reported that Apple is likely to release its first mixed-reality headset next year. Zuckerberg describes Meta’s and Apple’s XR ambitions as a “deep, philosophical competition.”
About 11,000 Meta employees were laid off last week, the first such major cut in the company’s history. It was unprecedented for a company that has had close to two decades of robust and uninterrupted growth. The cuts are meant to rein in spending following investor alarm over the company’s loss-making metaverse pursuits.
While Meta’s focus has been on virtual reality, the other major tech giants, Apple and Snap have trained their eyes on Augmented Reality.
