Sandbox VR is developing a location-based Squid Game VR experience in collaboration with Netflix. The experience will launch later in the year.

Sandbox VR has created adaptations of some of the most popular franchises such as Star Trek: Discovery Away Mission. Now it is set to take on a popular Netflix series.

Squid Game was released in September 2021 and has been the most-watched TV series on the platform with 1.65 billion viewing hours in 142 million households. The second season of Squid Game is set to release later in 2023. Unsurprisingly, Netflix has now partnered with Sandbox VR for an official VR adaption of the series.

The Sandbox VR CEO Steve Zhao stated that a VR adaptation of the series provided an “amazing opportunity” for partnering with Netflix and giving Squid Game fans an opportunity to immerse themselves into the world of the series.

At the moment, it isn’t clear what Squid Game challenges would be adapted into virtual reality experiences. However, a Sandbox official description states that the adaptation would transport players into “iconic Squid Game locations” in which they will participate in contests in various “pulse-pounding challenges” that are inspired by the original Netflix series. Players will also compete against each other in a bid to be the last one standing. Players will get personalized highlight videos that capture their in-game reactions and which recap the proceedings of their Squid Game once they have completed every game session.

Squid Game has been in VR before. However, this will be the show’s first official adaptation. The initial adaptation was by the developer Soaring Roc who released a multiplayer version of the popular ‘Red Light, Green Light’ change for the Quest platform.  This challenge involved players racing to the finish line during the green light by holding the controller triggers and waving their hands but when the user is caught moving as the light turns red, they will be shot and will be forced to retreat.

The Sandbox VR x Squid Game VR experience is set to open in late 2023. Sandbox is currently operating more than 30 worldwide locations.
