Previous reports and leaks said Meta would follow its consumer-focused virtual reality headset, the Meta Quest 3, with a new headset in the same price range that was codenamed “Cardiff”. Reports have now emerged that Meta has canned the ‘Cardiff’ headset as part of its cost-cutting measures.

Tech journalist Alex Heath reports in his latest Command Line newsletter on Meta’s latest cost-cutting measures, including the looming layoffs at the company. These measures will also affect the Reality Labs division. Heath writes that two of Meta’s early-stage prototypes codenamed Cardiff and Hermosa have recently been canned.

The report also states that Meta is set to hold a multi-day summit of Reality Labs executives next week where the company will chart out the visions and roadmaps of the future. The summit will feature a meeting titled “Must Go Faster”.

Meta is changing its hardware roadmap. The Cardiff headset was first mentioned in May 2022 after The Information reported to have seen the company’s roadmap, reporting that Meta was aiming to launch four headsets between 2022 and 2024.

According to The Information report, the launch timeline for the four headsets was to be as follows: –

  • 2022: “Cambria” headset or the Meta Quest Pro which has already been launched.
  • 2023: “Stinson” headset or the Meta Quest 3
  • 2024: “Cardiff”
  • 2024: “Funston”

According to The Information article, Funston would be the “second version of Cambria”, so likely a Meta Quest Pro 2. The Cardiff, now canned, was meant to be one of the two less expensive Quest headset versions.

However, Meta has already confirmed that the Meta Quest 3 will launch in 2023. The Information reported that Meta had planned another virtual reality headset (Cardiff) within the same price range for next year and this project has now been cancelled, according to Heath’s report.
