Hitman World of Assassination Launches on PS VR2 With Physical Interaction Overhaul

Hitman World of Assassination is available on PlayStation VR2 as of March 27, giving PS5 owners a new way to approach Agent 47’s globe-spanning stealth assignments. IO Interactive says the headset version introduces VR-focused changes including independent use of both hands, dual-wielding and room-scale interactions.
The release brings material from the modern Hitman trilogy into Sony’s headset, including its well-known sandbox environments and missions built around observation, disguises and improvised solutions. A paid VR Access add-on provides the new mode for eligible owners of the base game.
The central question is whether interaction changes can make a familiar game feel genuinely different. Hitman’s intricate environments have long invited players to examine routines, manipulate objects and improvise. VR creates opportunities to make those actions feel less like selecting commands and more like carrying out a plan yourself.
Hitman’s sandboxes are a natural VR setting
The series is built around densely populated spaces with multiple paths to a target. Players can observe guards, exploit distractions, borrow disguises and decide whether to act quietly or take substantial risks. These systems already encourage the sort of environmental attention that VR can intensify.
In a headset, leaning to inspect a location or physically aiming an object can feel different from performing the same action with an analog stick. Even the act of approaching a crowded room may change when everyone around the player appears to occupy an actual space at human scale.
IO Interactive says its PS VR2 adaptation supports wielding weapons in both hands and independently manipulating items. Those changes matter because they give players additional control over the relationship between objects and their own movements.
A convincing version of Hitman in VR needs to do more than display the game’s locations stereoscopically. Interactions must be understandable, dependable and comfortable enough to withstand hours of repeated experimentation.
What’s included in the release
The PS VR2 implementation covers the trilogy of locations and missions collected under World of Assassination. The VR Access upgrade is listed at $10 for players who already have a compatible version of the game, while a separate purchasing path is also offered for those entering the series.
Players should read the relevant PlayStation Store listings carefully because owning an older version, a particular edition or an individual package does not always confer identical entitlements. The important distinction is between access to the conventional Hitman game and the additional VR mode.
Sony’s headset supplies OLED displays, head tracking and Sense controllers. Those capabilities give IO Interactive a platform for more deliberate physical interaction than the series’ traditional console controls.
However, the presence of such features does not establish that every gesture or mission sequence will work flawlessly. Hitman’s systems are complex, with many scripted events and interactions that were not originally designed around physical hands.
A chance to address previous criticism
This is not the first attempt to bring modern Hitman into VR. Earlier versions reached other platforms, including PlayStation VR and PC VR, and a separate Quest adaptation was released in 2024. Reception of those versions showed how difficult it can be to convert a complex flat-screen game into a convincing immersive one.
Complaints about control compromises, visual presentation and interaction quality have raised expectations for the PS VR2 edition. IO Interactive has emphasized the revised mechanics, and that is a meaningful starting point. It should not be read as proof that all earlier concerns are resolved.
The appeal of Hitman is its freedom, but freedom multiplies the number of situations a developer must handle. If a player grabs an object from an unusual angle or attempts to interact with two items simultaneously, the game must respond coherently. Small inconsistencies become especially noticeable when actions are performed at arm’s length.
Why a major existing game matters
VR platforms need original games that could not exist outside a headset. They also benefit from adaptations of respected conventional releases. A recognizable series can introduce experienced players to VR without demanding they learn an unfamiliar fictional world at the same time.
Hitman offers significant replayability because missions can be approached in many ways. That quality could be valuable for headset owners looking for something deeper than a short demonstration or arcade experience.
But it creates an important standard for success. A VR adaptation should improve the way players interact with the missions, not simply persuade them to revisit content they already know.
The next test is in players’ hands
With the PS VR2 version now available, its practical strengths and weaknesses can be assessed beyond trailers and developer descriptions. Tracking fidelity, physical object handling, comfort options and mission stability are likely to be more important to serious players than any single visual showcase.
For owners of World of Assassination, the $10 upgrade may offer an appealing experiment. For newcomers, the wider game purchase and the cost of PlayStation hardware remain relevant considerations.
The launch has given Agent 47 another way to enter a room. Whether that perspective becomes the preferred way to play will depend on how faithfully the adaptation translates Hitman’s unusually flexible mechanics into the physical language of virtual reality.
