Valve Makes Custom Lenses for Virtual Reality
Valve announced that new core components needed by Virtual Reality hardware manufacturers will soon be available to deliver best-in-class VR systems.
Valve Offers More Core Virtual Reality Technologies
Valve, the creator of Steam and SteamVR, announced the addition of important pieces for developing advanced Virtual Reality hardware: an optical system, calibration and manufacturing tools, and the required software stack to link the hardware for a more user-friendly experience.
“World class VR requires highly precise tracking, matched optics and display technologies, and a software stack that weaves together the interactions between these components,” said Jeremy Selan of Valve. “For the first time, we’re making all of these technologies available to anyone who wants to build a best in class VR system for the millions of Steam customers accessing over 2,000 SteamVR compatible titles.”
Valve developed custom lenses that function with both OLED and display technologies and will make these lenses available for use in SteamVR compatible VR headsets. The lenses and Valve’s unique correction and calibration software are specifically designed to be paired with numerous VR headsets to allow the highest quality visual experiences in VR.
Standard optical solutions usually support a field of view between 85 and 120 degrees. Valve’s lenses are designed to support the next generation of room-scale VR, they can optimize people’s perceived image sharpness and tracking experience while reducing stray light. The company is including the custom lens correction and calibration software within the SteamVR technology suite.
Valve is still offering sub-millimeter, full room-scale, tracking technology by providing a reference design for the Watchman tracking module and by delivering base stations with SteamVR Tracking 2.0 technology for sale.
