Apple Launches Augmented Reality Art Exhibitions Across Multiple Cities
Apple is teaming up with New York’s New Museum to launch an augmented reality art experience dubbed [AR]T. The AR art experience will be available in multiple global cities including New York, San Francisco, Paris, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
[AR]T provides an augmented reality curation of various art pieces that will be featured in various guided walks where visitors will use iPhones to view the art curated pieces. The art walk project was first announced in July but it is set to debut today.
The walk tours will be free and also open to the public beginning this Saturday. Every tour will start at an Apple Store location in the city and will feature the same artwork. The art pieces to be featured in the exhibition will only be available at specific points on the walk. The whole exhibition will create a sort of multi-city open-air virtual exhibition.
For the [AR]T program, Apple will feature augmented reality art by artists such as Nathalie Djurberg, Pipilotti Rist, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Nick Cave, Hans Berg and Carsten Holler. The artists were picked by the New Museum.
The starting point of every [AR]T art tour will begin at the Apple Store. Here, visitors will get an iPhone and headphones with which to experience the artwork. The art pieces will only be accessible at specific points of the walk, thereby giving users a multi-city art exhibit. Visitors will be able to experience the artworks only within this art tour and not with any iPhone. That’s why you must start your tour at the Apple Store in your city where you will be provided with an iPhone and headphones although users are allowed to use their won AirPods.
The New York exhibition, for example, will start at the Apple Fifth Avenue and lead visitors through the Central Park. The San Francisco exhibits will commence at the Apple Union Square and lead walkers down Post Street. Users will view the selected places through a smartphone screen and the artworks will pop out from there.
Some of the artworks will be interactive such as those by Nick Cave. The walker will begin by creating a digital companion who will then perform certain activities. There will even be a digital factory where you can re-sort boxes.
There will also be an educational aspect for the [AR]T experience as Apple will be hosting a lab for users interested in learning more about augmented reality.
Every walk will go for about 1.5 miles. You can sign up for the AR art exhibition on the Apple website.
You can also check out the Today at Apple page for information on every artist featured on the [AR]T walk and the type of art you are going to experience during the exhibition.
